Invited to the opening address of the French Republic President, Emmanuel Macron, the delegates of the Member States of the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) attended the International Agricultural Show held on 23 February 2019 in Paris. It was an opportunity for the CIHEAM to recall the importance of dialogue and cooperation in the Mediterranean with regard to agricultural and rural development.
The delegates of the 13 member states of the CIHEAM attended the opening speech of President Emmanuel Macron during the International Agriculture Show and were received by Frédéric Lambert, Head of the Europe and International Service of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The Secretary-General of the CIHEAM, Plácido Plaza, recalled the importance of multilateral dialogue and cooperation in the Mediterranean in the fields of agriculture and fisheries, which offer shared opportunities and ensure local development.
The theme of the 2019 Show “Women, Men, Talents” and President Macron’s strong message to young farmers converge on two CIHEAM strategic priorities: to fight against the waste of knowledge, traditional know-how and human potential in the Mediterranean region, and to invest in new generations and rural areas, through training, capacity building and technical assistance activities.
As such, the 12th Ministerial meeting of the CIHEAM to be held in Tunis (November 2019) will focus on “Youth empowerment as a lever for agricultural and rural development in the Mediterranean”.
The CIHEAM delegation then visited several stands devoted to livestock breeding, plant chains and finally met their partners from INRA and CIRAD. In addition, delegates took advantage of this day to visit the Mediterranean stands and appreciate the flagship products of the region whose CIHEAM defends the traditional know-how.
