The telecoms operator acquired its 5G licence last January for $150 million. It has already launched an experimental phase at five sites across Egypt. It has also signed an agreement with Huawei for the deployment of the technology.
On 15 July, state-owned Telecom Egypt announced the signing of a partnership agreement with Finnish technology company Nokia. The collaboration covers the deployment of 5G in the country ‘later this year’.
Under the terms of the agreement, Nokia will deploy 5G radio access network (RAN) equipment from its AirScale portfolio in a number of Egyptian cities including Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Aswan and Luxor. The infrastructure provider will not only deploy the network, but also integrate and optimise it.
This partnership comes seven months after Telecom Egypt acquired Egypt’s first 5G licence for $150 million, valid for 15 years. A few days later, the incumbent operator announced that it had launched experimental operations of the next-generation network at five sites across the country. On 27 February, the company signed its first partnership agreement with the Chinese technology company Huawei for the deployment of its ultra high-speed network.
Telecom Egypt promises its subscribers enhanced mobile broadband and exciting new applications that take advantage of the speed and low latency of 5G technology. ‘5G technology will bring many benefits, including increased capacity for seamless connectivity in some of Egypt’s most densely populated areas. This will support a wide range of applications and services, resulting in faster downloads, smoother streaming and improved network performance,’ the telco added.
