Experimental production of gas from the Mediterranean offshore Zohr field, is expected to begin in the next few days, Egypt’s Minister of Petrolum Tarek El-Molla stated on December 10th.

The Most important gas project in the Mediterranean is set to start an experimental production. Discovered in 2015 by Italian ENI, the Zohr offshore natural gas field is located in the Shourouk concession. ” The completion of the project’s first phase and the gradual increase of production is scheduled for mid-2018,” said the Minister of Petroleum Tarek El-Molla.

Almost twice the size of the Leviathan’s field operated by Noble Energy, the Zohr exploitation will allow the production of almost 10 million cubic meters per day by the end of 2017, according to the minister. Its global potential is around 850 billion cubic meters.

Seeking to revive its economy by realizing substantial investments in the Energy sector, Egypt announced that it plans to inject funds worth around 27 million dollars in three natural gas fields, including the Zohr, North Alexandria, and Nooros, in 2018.

Furthermore, 83 new exploration agreements worth 15, 5 billion dollars will be signed and 230 wells worth 2 billion dollars will be drilled. It is notheworthy to observe that recent discoveries would allow Egypt to raise its outpout up to 50% in 2018 and 100% in 2020.
