The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), the Institute for Research in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN and the OCP Group, have signed a framework cooperation agreement aimed at setting up the GREEN H2A technological platform dedicated to R&D and Innovation in the green hydrogen sector and its applications.

This infrastructure, a first on an African scale, aims to play a major role in the industrial deployment of the green hydrogen sector and its applications in Morocco.

It will make it possible to investigate, test, demonstrate and adapt to the local context the innovative technologies of this promising sector of the future.

Alongside the National Commission for Green Hydrogen, and the “Green H2 Maroc” Cluster, Green H2A constitutes a structuring link in the green hydrogen ecosystem in the country.

Green H2A will support the academic and socio-economic world and will contribute to the emergence of the sector through in particular: an exploration of R&D potential and opportunities; technological and decision-making support for public policies and national and international manufacturers; an exchange of knowledge and know-how for the public and private sector, through the transfer of technology and intellectual property; a training offer; positioning as a partner of choice for international cooperation.

UM6P President Hicham El Habti explains: “UM6P is pleased with the establishment of this infrastructure which will be a real tool for creating value and knowledge, a real means of training and qualifying our human resources. This project is a great opportunity for Morocco which was recognized in 2018, among the 6 countries with the highest potential at the global level. The production of green hydrogen in Morocco will promote our economic growth, contribute to the decarbonization of our industry and allow us to co-finance our transition and our energy security “.

Badr Ikken, Managing Director of IRESEN adds: “Hydrogen is a key link in the energy transition. It is an energy vector with high potential that fits into both economic growth and sustainable development issues. This platform will accelerate the deployment and scale-up of this industrial sector in our country. Green H2A will also be a key ally for the national stakeholders concerned, in order to promote innovation and maximize the localization of industrial value in our country “.

Abdelaziz El Mallah. Industrial executive director of the OCP group concludes:

“The production of green hydrogen is an added value to the production of electricity from renewable sources, in particular its transformation into products with higher energy density and high economic potential. It responds to a significant global demand for green molecules that can approach carbon neutrality. This represents a real opportunity for our country and a potentially promising market for our industrial group ”.

It should be noted that one of the first projects of the Green H2A platform is a pre-industrial pilot for the production of 4 tonnes per day of green ammonia, equipped with an electrolysis capacity of 4MW, including 2MW PEM and 2MW Alkaline .

The platform, which will be located in the heart of the Jorf Lasfar industrial site, of the OCP Group, over an initial area of 5 ha, will be equipped with other “outdoor” pilots and demonstrators to come, and will be equipped with a building housing “indoor” laboratories, as well as researchers’ offices
