Lebanese President Michel Aoun called on Arab countries to support Lebanon following the terrible explosion that occurred in the port of Beirut.

Lebanon needs all the help it can get in all areas, and it has high hopes in the brotherly Arab countries,Aoun said after his meeting with Arab League secretary general Ahmed Aboul Gheit, at the presidential palace in Beirut.

The catastrophe is of considerable magnitude“, he declared, before calling on the Arab countries to contribute to the reconstruction of Beirut.
Aboul Gheit, for his part, declared that he had assured the Lebanese president of the Arab League’s support for Lebanon.

The secretary general of the Arab League has declared that he will participate in the international conference that France wishes to organize to support Lebanon.

We are going to relay Lebanon’s requests to the international community,” Aboul Gheit said.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday during a visit to Beirut that France, the United States, the EU and the World Bank will hold a global conference to support Lebanon.

At least 154 people were killed and 6,000 injured in the explosion that hit the port of Beirut last Tuesday.

Officials said the explosion, which caused extensive property damage in several parts of Beirut, was caused by the blast of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, stored for six years in the port, in unsanitary conditions.

The Lebanese government has announced the creation of a commission of inquiry to shed light on this incident, which occurred as Lebanon is going through its worst economic crisis since the end of the country’s civil war.
